This is a case of a kitchen remodel that increased the usable space without increasing the footprint of the room.

Andrea and Katie, long-time residents of South Minneapolis, approached us with a unique challenge. Having endured 15 years in their home, their kitchen, once a budget fix, no longer met their expectations in terms of style and craftsmanship. The peninsula that once separated the dining room and kitchen had created a sense of confinement, and the aging tile on the kitchen floor with its cracking grout only added to their woes. As seasoned home remodelers and contractors, we were excited to embark on a journey to rejuvenate this small South Minneapolis kitchen and give it a new lease on life.

The Dilemma

Andrea and Katie’s kitchen, while functional, felt cramped due to the peninsula. The outdated styling and craftsmanship were apparent, and the cracked grout in the tile hinted at the need for a comprehensive overhaul. Our challenge was clear: how could we make the kitchen feel larger without altering the existing footprint?

The Vision

After engaging in thoughtful discussions with Andrea and Katie, we formulated a plan that went beyond just fixing the existing issues. The key was to remove the peninsula and create an opening into the living room above the range, allowing for a seamless transition between the kitchen and the adjacent living space.

This strategic move aimed not only to enhance the visual appeal but also to make the kitchen feel more open and inviting.

The Transformation

With an agreed-upon budget, we began the remodel in the fall of 2023. The removal of the peninsula was a game-changer. The newfound openness in the kitchen immediately created a more spacious and airier atmosphere. By creating an opening into the living room, we not only improved the flow between spaces but also made the living room more accessible and appealing.

The tile on the kitchen floor was replaced with a more durable and aesthetically pleasing option, eliminating the issue of cracking grout. Careful attention was paid to the choice of materials and finishes to ensure a cohesive and stylish look that would stand the test of time.

The Impact

The impact of the transformation was profound. Previously, guests would gravitate towards the back porch due to the separation between the kitchen and the front of the home. However, with the removal of the peninsula and the creation of an opening into the living room, the entire living space became more inviting and dynamic. The kitchen, once a utilitarian space, became a central hub for socializing and entertaining.

The small South Minneapolis kitchen project exemplifies the transformative power of thoughtful design and skilled craftsmanship.

Andrea and Katie’s kitchen, once a source of frustration, is now a showcase of functionality, style, and openness. The removal of the peninsula and the strategic opening into the living room not only met but exceeded the clients’ expectations.

As home remodelers and contractors, it is immensely gratifying to witness the positive impact our work has on the lives of homeowners. The Small South Minneapolis Kitchen stands as a testament to the ability of a well-executed remodel to enhance not only the physical space but also the overall experience of home.

Client Testimonial

We had a great experience working with Skapar. Renovating our 1950’s Southside Mpls kitchen was something we wanted for a long time.

Nate was so patient  as we worked through the design and figuring out what was realistic financially for us. We landed on a design that has completely changed our experience in our home. All of the folks he has are absolutely amazing. Super detailed and accountable and nice. The quality of work was exceptional.

Nate’s attention to detail is reflective of his craftsmanship. When he does a project it is clear he is fully invested and wants to ensure that the final product is high quality and reflective of the vision of the homeowner.
